As we age, our skin is subject to deterioration caused by environmental and lifestyle factors in addition to the natural aging process. The skin loses elasticity and suffers from collagen and hyaluronic acid reduction which leads to sagging, dryness, and wrinkling. Ingestion of oral hydrolyzed collagen supplementation reaches the deeper layers of the skin to provide building blocks for the formation of collagen and elastin fibers. Many studies have shown that with continued intake of hydrolyzed collagen, individuals experience a significant reduction in average wrinkle depth, increase in skin elasticity, and increase in skin hydration.
Healthier Hair and Nails
Studies have shown that consistent consumption of collagen helps hair and nail health. In one study, a total of 54 women were selected for two trials of a powder formulation containing hyaluronic acid and collagen, among other ingredients, one lasting 8 weeks and the other 60 weeks. In the 8-week study, nail cracking and brittleness decreased by 80% with an increase in strength. Hair dryness and dullness statistically and significantly decreased over the course of the study with a corresponding increase in softness and luster. At the end of the 60-week study, 100% of the participants saw improvement in hair dryness, hair dullness, and nail peeling.
In another study, 120 individuals participated in a trial in which half consumed a product containing hydrolyzed collagen and hyaluronic acid, among other ingredients, over the course of 90 days. 91% of those taking the collagen product self-reported that their hair and nails were stronger at the end of the study, 81% reported thicker hair, and 93% reported healthier nails.
While more research is necessary, some studies have indicated that collagen hydrolysate may function as a prebiotic. Prebiotics are defined as a food component that can change the activity or growth of the microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tract. Changing the growth of different members of the microbiome can have implications in human health by producing metabolic byproducts of the gut flora which have been shown to regulate inflammation and exhibit antioxidant activity. Long term ingestion of collagen hydrolysate might change protease activity in the digestive tract with beneficial effects not only on the GI tract but also in axes such as the gut-brain axis and the gut-epithelial axis.
Joint and Bone Health
As hydrolyzed collagen is absorbed intestinally, it accumulates in the cartilage and stimulates the regeneration of chondrocytes (cells found in the cartilage). Joint pain, a potential symptom of cartilage degradation, may be alleviated by ingesting a hydrolyzed collagen supplement. A clinical trial, using a randomized double-blind, controlled study, recruited 250 subjects with primary knee Osteoarthritis determined that after taking 10g of collagen hydrolyzate daily for six months, the subjects experienced a significant improvement in knee joint function and pain. Another study with 90 participants was held to investigate the efficacy of a hydrolyzed collagen supplement in reducing joint-related discomfort such as pain and stiffness, and in improving mobility. After eight weeks, the group taking the supplement had a 45.8% reduction in pain, a 42.6% reduction in stiffness, and a 49.4% reduction in difficulty in physical activities.
Collagen is an important element of the extracellular matrix of skeletal muscle, ligaments, cartilage, bone, and tendons and is mainly responsible for their functionality in terms of force transmission, flexibility, and adaptation. However, a number of animal and human studies have reported significant increases in muscle collagen turnover following muscle-damaging exercise. To combat the loss of collagen, collagen supplements combined with Vitamin C are important in stimulating collagen synthesis as the amino acids within hydrolyzed collagen are well absorbed into the blood and can augment collagen synthesis. A few studies have shown that the combination of resistance exercise and collagen peptide supplementation can increase fat free mass and muscle strength, accelerate muscle recovery, and lessen pain after intense exercise.
It has been established that under most conditions, protein is more satiating than the ingestion of carbohydrate or fat, suggesting that a modest increase in protein may promote satiety and facilitate weight loss through reduced energy consumption. Collagen supplements provide protein with less calories than other protein supplements which may aid in the feeling of fullness with less caloric intake. Further, preclinical trials have shown that a supplementation with collagen peptides reduces adipocyte (a cell specialized for the storage of fat) size which may contribute to the result of an increase in fat free mass, decrease in fat mass, and decrease in body weight in both men and women in a few controlled trials.
Skinny Greens’ Slimming Greens Blend contains a blend of glucomannan, green tea leaf extract, and apple cider vinegar, all of which have been found to aid in weight loss and promote satiety. Glucomannan is a soluble fiber derived from the root of the konjac plant and is capable of quickly absorbing water, resulting in feelings of fullness and decreased appetite. Studies and trials have shown significant body weight loss after participants had taken a glucomannan supplement over the course of several weeks. A number of reports have been published showing that the regular consumption of green tea extracts may influence energy metabolism, body weight, and body fat content with a potential for an influence on subcutaneous abdominal fat and visceral fat because of their effects on thermogenesis stimulation and fat oxidation.
With only 4mg of caffeine per serving, Skinny Greens relies on its many plant powders to provide energy. For example, wheat grass powder provides energy by fulfilling nutritional deficiencies and by removing waste that clog cells, blood, tissues, and organs. Similarly, the ingestion of moringa olieifera leaves can penetrate deeply into the body’s tissues to clean impurities, toxins, and waste which leads to a boost in sustainable energy.
Increased Mental Clarity
Green tea and matcha tea have been found to promote clarity of mind and cognitive function while also inducing relaxation. This promotion of mental clarity is due to the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) present within green tea leaves, as EGCG inhibits lipopolysaccharide-induced production of reactive oxygen species. It is suggested that EGCG is a potent and effective neuroprotective agent in neurological disorders mediated by inflammation.
Skinny Greens’ Mood-Boosting Adaptogen Blend’s ashwagandha root powder and rhodiola root powder aid in relieving stress and enhancing wellbeing. Stress is induced by the release of the corticotropin releasing hormone in the hypothalamus which activates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The ACTH then stimulates the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol in the adrenal glands. Ashwagandha root is an herb that combats stress by reducing the stress-induced increase in cortisol and corticosterone levels and by modulating the immune system. Similarly, rhodiola root increases the body’s resistance to stress by normalizing the release of stress hormones while simultaneously boosting energy metabolism via activation of the adenosine triphosphate synthesis in the mitochondria. Both ashwagandha and rhodiola supplementation improved anxiety scores and stress markers and symptoms in the human trials as evidenced by statistically significant declines in the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, Perceived Stress Scale and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.
Clear, Revitalized Skin
Turmeric contains anti-inflammatory effects, but it also contains antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antineoplastic properties. There have been many studies that note statistically significant improvement in skin disease severity in groups ingesting turmeric compared with control groups. There is evidence that turmeric products and supplements, both oral and topical, may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health. Green tea is also helpful in aiding the skin, as in a study, 56 randomly chosen women were given oral green tea supplements for two years and were observed to have significant improvement in their facial skin and in controlling erythema. Finally, chlorella promotes collagen synthesis and prevents wrinkle formation by acting on the epidermis to erase vascular imperfection.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules produced from aerobic metabolism that can damage the cellular membrane or intracellular molecules if not efficiently removed by the antioxidant defense mechanisms of the cell. Spirulina is an alga (cyanobacterium) that contains high contents of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Increase in apoptotic cell death occurs in inflammation or infection, but spirulina has shown to have protective effects against apoptotic cell death induced by free radicals. Similarly, chlorella, also an alga, has been found to have beneficial effects in improving inflammatory biomarkers while also having antioxidant effect.
Probiotics are live microorganisms and bacteria that are intended to have health benefits, most commonly belonging to groups called Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Skinny Greens contains both groups, along with other probiotic ingredients. The probiotics interact with the gut microbes and offer anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antiobesity, antipathogenicity, angiogenic, anticancer activities, and neuroprotective properties. Probiotics are particularly important when the normal, native flora have been disturbed, as supplemented probiotics can temporarily colonize the intestinal tract and stabilize the microflora composition and restore vital physiological function of a commensal flora. Within the digestive system, probiotics stimulate, modulate, and regulate various functions including digestion, competitive exclusion of pathogens, epithelial innate immunity, metabolism, and gut-brain communication.
Supports Weight Loss
Oolong and green tea have been used in ancient days for medicinal purposes and continue to provide beneficial health effects. Several studies have shown that the consumption of oolong and green tea can stimulate energy expenditure and fat oxidation, both of which are further enhanced when paired with exercise.
Helps Reduce Bloating
In an eight-week, randomized, controlled clinical trial, 65 participants were provided with either SkinnyFit Detox or a placebo tea. Significantly more participants using SkinnyFit Detox experienced reduction in intracellular water, extracellular water, and total body water, along with reduction in abdominal and facial bloating.

SkinnyFit Detox contains many ingredients high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, including milk thistle and lemongrass. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals (unstable molecules made by the process of oxidation during normal metabolism). Research and trials have reported the antitoxic effect of milk thistle in preventing liver damage by protecting it from exposure to various toxins, alcohol, and drugs.
L-Theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, has been reported to have stress resistance and neuroprotective properties and studies have shown stress-related symptoms improve after L-theanine administration.
Support Immune System
Intake of Vitamin A, C, and E have all been linked to enhancing various immune cell functions that support a healthy immune system to help keep your immune system working properly.
